Who are we?

Orania is striving to create a self-reliant, independent home for Afrikaners where every resident can thrive in freedom, safety and prosperity. This home should not only be sustainable, but should also be able to grow and flourish in harmony with the continent in general and its direct environment in particular.

Orania’s desire forms part of the Solidarity Movement’s federal plan which is aimed at fostering the identity of Afrikaners, establishing community structures for Afrikaners and creating a space where Afrikaners can live and work in freedom. Consequently, an office was opened in 2019 that has enabled the Movement to become involved in a variety of activities in Orania as co-developer.

The Orania Ontwikkelingsmaatskappy (OOM) has since then been coordinating and managing all aid, investments and projects of the Solidarity Movement in Orania. Concerning the erection of facilities, OOM was responsible for the establishment, inter alia, of the Steenbok hostel and the Gannabos housing complex. The former is a facility where groups visiting Orania can stay, and the latter provides accommodation for 102 families. OOM was also responsible for the establishment of the Bo-Karoo safety centre. This building at present houses a medical centre, and Orania’s security operations – as well as those of the region – are coordinated from here.

The need for competent, well-trained artisans at Orania resulted in the establishment of Bo-Karoo Opleiding (BKO) to provide appropriate training. In this way, BKO not only meets Orania’s need for expert artisans, but also enhances the standard of living of the residents. Furthermore, OOM supports other public enterprises, such as the various schools, Karoosig old-age home and Helpmekaar social services.

In 2001, in collaboration with the Orania Town Council, OOM obtained the services of urban planners to draft a complete urban design for Orania. This design provides the broad guidelines according to which Orania can and must develop from a town to a city.
